Rev. Lowell (Lowell D. Streiker) is available for speaking engagements, workshops, conferences, and preaching. During the past few years, he has spoken, sung, preached and entertained in the United States, Norway, Germany, Holland, Finland, Russia, Poland and Hungary.
Inspirational humorist, Lowell D. Streiker is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and holds a Ph.D. in religion from Princeton University. He has written, co-authored, edited, and contributed to more than twenty books. He has co-produced and moderated the television series, "Counterpoint," for CBS. He has appeared on numerous radio and television programs including "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "The Merv Griffin Show,” and CBS Morning News.
Reverend Lowell D. Streiker, Ph.D., is a public speaker, an inspirational humorist, an author, counselor, and consultant. For several years he was the Executive Director of Freedom Counseling Center, Burlingame, California. The Freedom Counseling Center provided effective and sensitive counseling services to individuals and families whose lives have been disrupted by cults.
The Center was founded by Dr. Streiker, who is described by Prometheus Press as "America's leading expert on cults and sects" and is internationally recognized as an authority on contemporary religious movements. The Center was an outgrowth of his work with survivors of People's Temple. During its six year history, Freedom Counseling Center assisted over two thousand families throughout the world.
Dr. Streiker is the author, co-author, editor of, and contributor to thirty-six books. He is the author of several standard works dealing with sects, cults, and conversion phenomena including The Cults Are Coming; Cults: The Continuing Threat; Mind-Bending: Brainwashing, Cults, and Deprogramming in the '80s; and The Gospel Time Bomb: Ultrafundamentalism and the Future of America. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in philosophy from Temple University and both a MA and Ph.D. in religion from Princeton University.
After teaching religion at Temple University for eight years, Dr. Streiker served as a member of the national campaign staff of US Senator Henry M. Jackson. He has served as a consultant on religious affairs to the National Conference of Christians and Jews, to various church bodies, to members of the US Congress, and to the White House. In addition, he was co-producer and moderator of the television series, "Counterpoint," on WCAU-TV (CBS) in Philadelphia.
From l976 to l979, he was Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of San Mateo County. He was also the administrative director of Parental Stress Service of San Mateo County, an agency devoted to the prevention of child abuse and neglect. Before coming to San Mateo County, he was Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Delaware for three years. In Delaware, he was responsible for revitalizing the Association, beginning a widely accepted Patient Advocate program at Delaware State Mental Hospital, and personally directing efforts to win greater support for the needs of Delaware's mentally ill by the General Assembly.
Dr. Streiker has been qualified as an expert witness on cults, sects, and religious experience as well as child abuse and neglect in various jurisdictions in the United States and Canada. As a participant-observer, he has previously studied evangelical groups (such as the Jesus movement, the Shepherding movement, Ultrafundamentalism, the Children of God, the Alamo Christian Foundation, and many small sects) as well as traditional Catholic orders, the Unification Church, the Hare Krishnas, and major growth seminars. Over the years, he has counseled individuals and families involved in more than a hundred different groups.
His counseling activities have taken him to 26 states, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, and South Africa. His field studies have taken place throughout the United States, Great Britain, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Germany, and Holland. In 1996, he visited churches in Norway, Sweden, Russia, Poland, Romania, and Hungary.
Always at home with the media, Dr. Streiker has been a frequent guest on radio and television programs including The Oprah Winfrey Show, the Merv Griffin Show, CBS Morning News, and hundreds of local radio programs in many markets. He has been interviewed by The New York Times, Time and Newsweek magazines, and many other publications in the United States and abroad.
He is currently the chairman of the Shasta County Mental Health Board and board member of the Northern California Writers’ Forum.
